La missione Copernicus Sentinel-2 ci porta sul bacino Tanezrouft, una delle aree più desolate del deserto del Sahara.
Tanezrouft è una regione del Sahara che si estende nell’Algeria meridionale e nel Mali settentrionale. L’area iperarida è nota per le sue impennate di temperature e per gli scarsi accessi ad acqua e vegetazione, motivi per cui è spesso chiamata ‘la Terra del Terrore’. Non ci sono residenti che vivono in maniera permanente in quest’area, ma solo occasionali nomadi Tuareg.
La sterile pianura si sviluppa ad ovest dei monti Hoggar ed a sud-est del sabbioso Erg Chech. Il terreno mostra evidenza di fenomeni di erosione idrica risalenti a molti anni or sono, quando il clima del deserto del Sahara era molto più umido e mostra anche fenomeni di erosione dovuti ai venti, causati da frequenti tempeste di sabbia - mostrando antiche pieghe nelle rocce del Paleozoico.
La regione è caratterizzata da colline di arenaria scura, ripide pareti di canyon, saline (visibili di colore bianco nell’immagine), altopiani di pietra e mari di dune di sabbia a più piani che prendono il nome di ‘erg’. Anelli concentrici di strati di arenaria a vista creano un motivo spettacolare, che risulta prevalentemente visibile nella parte sinistra dell’immagine.
Le linee bianche a destra dello scenario sono strade che conducono ad In Salah, capitale della provincia e del distretto di In Salah. Appena sopra ed a sinistra del centro dell’immagine si può individuare una pista di atterraggio per aerei.
Un interessante motivo a griglia si può osservare nella parte bassa dell’immagine e corrisponde in gran parte a radure e strade di realizzazione umana.
Questa immagine è stata acquisita il 12 gennaio 2020 dalla missione Copernicus Sentinel-2, una missione a due satelliti il cui compito è di fornire copertura e distribuzione di dati necessari per il programma europeo Copernicus.

Tanezrouft
The Copernicus Sentinel-2 mission takes us over the Tanezrouft Basin – one of the most desolate parts of the Sahara Desert.
Tanezrouft is a region of the Sahara lying in southern Algeria and northern Mali. The hyperarid area is known for its soaring temperatures and scarce access to water and vegetation, a reason why it’s often referred to as the ‘Land of Terror’. There are no permanent residents that live here, only occasional Tuareg nomads.
The barren plain extends to the west of the Hoggar mountains and southeast of the sandy Erg Chech. The terrain shows evidence of water erosion that occurred many years ago, when the Sahara Desert’s climate was much wetter, as well as wind erosion caused by frequent sandstorms – exposing ancient folds in the Paleozoic rocks.
The region is characterised by dark sandstone hills, steep canyon walls, salt flats (visible in white in the image), stone plateaus and seas of multi-storey sand dunes known as ‘ergs’. Concentric rings of exposed sandstone strata create a stunning pattern predominantly visible in the left of the image.
White lines in the right of the image are roads that lead to In Salah – the capital of the In Salah Province and In Salah District. Just above the centre-left of the image, an airstrip can be seen.
An interesting, grid-like pattern can be seen in the bottom of the image and mostly consists of human-made clearings and roads.
This image was captured on 12 January 2020 by the Copernicus Sentinel-2 mission – a two-satellite mission to supply the coverage and data delivery needed for Europe’s Copernicus programme.
