La missione Copernicus Sentinel-2 ci porta su Montevideo, che è la capitale ed al contempo la più grande città dell’Uruguay.
Con un’area di circa 175 000 kmq l’Uruguay è geograficamente le seconda più piccola nazione del Sud America. Circa la metà della sua popolazione totale vive nell’area metropolitana di Montevideo, visibile - in questa immagine della settimana - come una grigia distesa reticolare.
Montevideo è la capitale più meridionale delle Americhe ed è conosciuta per le sue spiagge, visibili nell’immagine ad est della città. La Rambla di Motevideo, il famoso lungomare della città, si allunga per 27 km lungo la costa, rendendola una delle più estese spianate al mondo.
Montevideo sorge sulla riva settentrionale del River Plate, chiamato anche Rio de la Plata in spagnolo, un estuario formato dalla confluenza dei fiumi Paranà ed Uruguay.
Il fiume Santa Lucia, visibile ad ovest di Montevideo, dà origine ad un confine naturale tra Montevideo ed il Dipartimento di San Josè. Questo fiume scorre per circa 270 km prima di formare un piccolo delta e riversarsi nel River Plate. E’ qui che le acque cariche di limo del fiume , visibili in colore marrone scuro, si mescolano con le acque torbide del River Plate.
Le acque provenienti da questi due fiumi fluiscono poi verso est e si mescolano con le acque più chiare e di color turchese dell’Oceano Atlantico Meridionale, visibile alla estrema destra dell’immagine.
Questa immagine è stata acquisita il 18 ottobre 2019 dalla missione Copernicus Sentinel-2, una missione a due satelliti il cui compito consiste nel fornire la copertura e la distribuzione di dati necessary al programma europeo Copernicus. I frequenti passaggi della missione sopra la stessa area geografica e la elevate risoluzione spaziale consentono un monitoraggio molto accurato dei cambiamenti avvenuti nel territorio e nei corpi d’acqua.

Montevideo
The Copernicus Sentinel-2 mission takes us over Montevideo – the capital and largest city of Uruguay.
With an area of around 175 000 sq km, Uruguay is geographically the second smallest nation in South America. Around half of the country’s total population lives in the Montevideo metropolitan area – visible as a grey, gridded expanse in this week’s image.
Montevideo is the southernmost capital city in the Americas and is known for its beaches – visible east of the city. The Rambla of Montevideo, the city’s famous promenade, stretches for 27 km along the coast – making it one of the longest esplanades in the world.
Montevideo lies on the northern shore of the River Plate, known as Río de la Plata in Spanish, an estuary formed by the confluence of the Paraná and Uruguay rivers.
The Santa Lucia River, visible west of Montevideo, forms the natural border between Montevideo and the San José Department. The Santa Lucía River flows for around 230 km before forming a small delta and emptying into the River Plate. It is here that the river’s silt-laden waters, visible in dark brown, mix with the murky coloured waters of the River Plate.
Water from these two rivers then flows eastwards and mixes with the clearer, turquoise-coloured waters of the South Atlantic Ocean – visible in the far-right of the image.
This image was captured on 18 October 2019 by the Copernicus Sentinel-2 mission – a two-satellite mission to supply the coverage and data delivery needed for Europe’s Copernicus programme. The mission’s frequent revisits over the same area and high spatial resolution allow changes in land cover and water bodies to be closely monitored.
