La missione Copernicus Sentinel-2 ci mostra il festival di Maha Kumbh Mela, il più grande raduno umano del mondo, che si è svolto nella città di Prayagraj, nel nord dell'India.
Riconosciuto dall'Unesco come facente parte della sua Lista Rappresentativa del Patrimonio Culturale Immateriale dell'Umanità, il Kumbh Mela è un pellegrinaggio indù che si tiene ogni pochi anni, attirando decine di milioni di pellegrini dall'India e da tutto il mondo. L'evento quest'anno si è tenuto dal 13 gennaio al 26 febbraio.
Quattro città sacre si alternano per ospitare il festival, nel corso del quale i pellegrini vengono a fare il bagno in un rituale di purificazione. Nel 2025 è stato un Maha (Grande) Kumbh Mela, che si verifica solo ogni 144 anni e che rende l’evento ancora più significativo.
Le immagini mostrano l'area alla confluenza del Gange con il fiume Yamuna nei pressi di Prayagraj, precedentemente nota come Allahabad. L'immagine a sinistra è stata ripresa il 13 dicembre 2024 un mese prima dell'inizio del festival, mentre l'immagine a destra è stata acquisita il 27 gennaio durante il festival e mostra chiaramente l'estensione delle strutture temporanee costruite per l'evento.
Lungo le rive del fiume Gange, una vasta area di oltre 40 chilometri quadrati è stata trasformata in una tentacolare tendopoli, con abitazioni, forniture di elettricità ed acqua potabile, parcheggi, circa 150.000 servizi igienici ed 11 ospedali. Nel fiume è anche visibile una serie di ponti galleggianti, che collegano le due sponde del Gange.
Il nome Kumbh Mela dal sanscrito si traduce in "Festa della Brocca Sacra", dove Kumbh si riferisce nella mitologia indù alla brocca o pentola che conteneva il nettare dell'immortalità, mentre Mela significa fiera o raccolta. Gli indù credono che gocce del nettare siano scese sulle quattro città sacre che oggi ospitano il pellegrinaggio.

Maha Kumbh Mela festival, India
The Copernicus Sentinel-2 mission captured the Maha Kumbh Mela festival, the world’s largest human gathering, which took place in the city of Prayagraj in northern India.
Recognised by Unesco in its Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, Kumbh Mela is a Hindu pilgrimage held every few years, attracting tens of millions of pilgrims from India and across the globe. The event this year was held from 13 January to 26 February.
Four sacred cities take it in turn to host the festival, where pilgrims come to bathe in a cleansing ritual. In 2025 it was a Maha (Great) Kumbh Mela, which occurs only every 144 years, making it even more significant.
The images in the slider show the area at the confluence of the Ganges with the Yamuna river near Prayagraj, formerly known as Allahabad. The image on the left was captured on 13 December 2024, one month before the beginning of the festival, while the image on the right was taken on 27 January, during the festival, and clearly shows the extent of the temporary structures built for the event.
A vast area covering more than 40 sq km along the banks of the Ganges river was converted into a sprawling tent city, with housing, electricity, drinking water, parking lots, around 150 000 toilets and 11 hospitals. A series of floating bridges are also visible in the river, connecting the two banks of the Ganges.
The name Kumbh Mela translates to ‘Festival of the Sacred Pitcher’ in Sanskrit, where Kumbh refers to the pitcher or pot that contained the nectar of immortality in Hindu mythology, and Mela means fair or gathering. Hindus believe that drops of the nectar fell on the four sacred cities that now host the pilgrimage.
