In questa immagine acquisita il 28 marzo 2023 è mostrato il centro storico della città di Roma, capitale d’Italia.
Conosciuta come "la Città Eterna", Roma si trova sulle rive del fiume Tevere, il terzo fiume più lungo d'Italia. Il Tevere è visibile nel suo serpeggiare attraverso la città. Il colore dell'acqua del fiume, dovuto letto sabbioso e limoso, è il motivo per cui il Tevere è talvolta chiamato " il fiume biondo".
In questa immagine è visibile un certo numero di siti di fama mondiale.
La caratteristica forma ovale del Colosseo, il più grande anfiteatro romano mai costruito, spicca al centro ed a destra dell'immagine, sul lato est del fiume e adiacente alle rovine del Foro Romano e del Palatino.
Immediatamente sotto si può riconoscere la sagoma allungata del Circo Massimo, che è stato il più grande ippodromo dell'antica Roma. A sinistra, su un'ansa del fiume, si trova l'Isola Tiberina a forma di barca, l'unica isola nella parte urbana del fiume.
Seguendo il Tevere verso nord troviamo, ad est della forma ellittica di Piazza Navona, la bianca cupola aperta del Pantheon, che ha un diametro di oltre 43 metri.
Un po 'più a nord, sulla parte opposta del fiume, si può individuare lo stato sovrano della Città del Vaticano, con la Basilica di San Pietro e la sua famosa piazza. Nelle vicinanze è visibile anche Castel Sant'Angelo, a forma di stella. Era la tomba dell'imperatore Adriano, ma in seguito divenne una fortezza.
Come appare evidente nell'immagine, Roma ha molti spazi verdi: parchi, ville storiche e giardini pubblici, aree che assieme coprono circa 4000 ettari.
Questa immagine è stata acquisita dalla missione Pléiades Neo, una costellazione ottica ad altissima risoluzione. Pléiades Neo fa parte del programma Third Party Missions dell'ESA, in base al quale ESA utilizza i suoi sistemi di terra multi-missione e le sue competenze per acquisire, elaborare, distribuire e archiviare i dati provenienti da una vasta gamma di missioni satellitari sviluppate e gestite da altre agenzie.

Rome, Italy
The historic centre of Rome, Italy’s capital city, is featured in this image captured on 28 March 2023.
Known as the Eternal City, Rome lies on the banks of the Tiber River, the third longest river in Italy. The Tiber can be seen snaking its way through the city. The colour of the river water, owing to the sandy and silty riverbed, is why the Tiber is sometimes known as the ‘blond river’.
A number of world-famous sites are visible in this image.
The distinctive oval shape of the Colosseum, the largest Roman amphitheatre ever built, stands out near the centre right of the image, on the east side of the river and adjacent to the ruins of the Roman Forum and the Palatine Hill.
Below that is the elongated outline of the Circus Maximus, which was the largest chariot racetrack in ancient Rome. To the left on a bend in the river, is the boat-shaped Tiber Island, the only island in the urban part of the river.
Following the Tiber northwards, we find, to the east of the elliptical shape of Piazza Navona, the white open-topped dome of the Pantheon, which is over 43 metres in diameter.
A little further north on the other side of the river, we can see the sovereign state of Vatican City, with St. Peter’s Basilica and its famous square. The star-shaped Castel St. Angelo is also visible nearby. It was the tomb of Emperor Hadrian, but later served as a fortress.
As evident in the image, Rome has many green spaces: parks, historic villas and public gardens, together covering about 4000 hectares.
This image was acquired by the Pléiades Neo mission, a very high-resolution optical constellation. Pléiades Neo is part of ESA’s Third Party Missions programme, which means ESA uses its multi-mission ground systems and expertise to acquire, process, distribute and archive data from a wide range of satellite missions developed and operated by other agencies.
