Seul - la capitale della Corea del Sud - con i suoi dintorni è mostrata in questa immagine, catturata dalla missione Copernicus Sentinel-2, il 21 febbraio 2023.
Situata a circa 50 km a sud del confine con la Corea del Nord, l'area metropolitana di Seul coincide con l'area grigia al centro dell'immagine.
Il fiume Han attraversa la città e sulla destra appare parzialmente coperto dal ghiaccio. È uno dei più grandi fiumi della penisola coreana. Scorre verso ovest attraversando Seul e si riversa infine nel Mar Giallo (chiamato così a causa della sabbia giallastra che colora le sue acque).
Seul è circondata da montagne boscose, che in questa immagine invernale appaiono di colore marrone.
Il Parco Nazionale di Bukhansan si trova appena a nord della città. Il parco è come un'isola, che funge da grande polmone verde per l'ambiente urbano circostante.
A ovest di Seul si trova la città costiera di Incheon, che funge da porto principale della città. L'aeroporto internazionale di Incheon, il principale aeroporto della Corea del Sud, è chiaramente visibile nell'immagine ad ovest della grande isola artificiale.
La diga artificiale della centrale mareomotrice del lago Sihwa, che crea un bacino lungo la costa, può essere individuata come una linea marrone chiaro verso la parte inferiore dell'immagine. È la più grande centrale mareomotrice del mondo e fa uso di forti maree che possono portare a differenze di livello dell'acqua di oltre sei metri. Segni di queste forze mareali possono essere riconosciuti nell'immagine, principalmente sotto forma di estesi banchi sabbiosi lungo la costa.
Ci sono anche numerosi allevamenti di ostriche che beneficiano delle forti maree. Sono visibili come rettangoli blu nella parte inferiore dell'immagine, all’interno del Mar Giallo.

Seoul, South Korea
South Korea’s capital city, Seoul, and surroundings are featured in this image, captured by the Copernicus Sentinel-2 mission on 21 February 2023.
Situated some 50 km south of the North Korean border, the metropolitan area of Seoul appears as the grey area in the centre of the image.
The Han River runs through the city, and to the right of the image it can be seen partly covered by ice. It is one of the biggest rivers in the Korean peninsula. It flows westward through Seoul into the Yellow Sea, named so because of the yellowish sand that colours its water.
Seoul is surrounded by forested mountains, which appear brown in this wintery image.
Bukhansan National Park lies just north of the city. The park is like an island, acting as a big green lung for the surrounding urban environment.
West of Seoul lies the coastal city of Incheon, which serves as Seoul’s chief port. The Incheon International Airport, South Korea’s main airport, is clearly visible in the image to the west of the large artificial island.
The artificial seawall of the Sihwa Lake tidal power station, which creates a basin along the coast, can be spotted as a light brown line towards the bottom of the image. It is the world’s largest tidal power station and it makes use of strong tides that can lead to water level differences of more than six metres. Signs of these tidal forces can be seen in the image, mainly in the form of extensive sandy banks along the coast.
There are also numerous oyster farms that also benefit from the strong tides. They are visible as blue rectangles at the very bottom of the image, in the Yellow Sea.
